Chapter Eleven

Levi reveled in every sensation—Faith safe, in his arms, their lips fused together, the warmth, sparkle, and joy that was his beloved Faith.

She loved him? Had she really said that before she kissed him? It was probably an aftereffect of the adrenaline and fear. She’d almost slipped over the edge. He’d almost lost her over a cliff like he’d lost both Selena and Annabelle.

Faith had lived. That was all that mattered right now. Simply thinking about losing her made him kiss her even more intensely. He didn’t know how he’d go on living if this whimsical, joy-filled, lit-up beauty died.

Through the tumult of emotion and feeling, the howl of the wind, the bite of the snow against his exposed face, and the love he felt for and from Faith, he registered the insistent buzzing of the satellite phone in his coat pocket.

It was the last thing in the world he wanted to do, but he framed Faith’s beautiful face with his gloved hands and gently pushed her away.

“What?” she demanded.

“I have to answer my phone and get you off this mountain.”

“Oh. Practical nonsense.” She smiled and moved in to kiss him again.

Levi wanted to grin, tell her he loved her, and kiss her until the snow built a cave around them, but she was in danger. This storm had become a blizzard and they were halfway up a series of tight switchbacks that would be treacherous, possibly deadly to navigate with low visibility.

He groaned instead of kissing her and rolled her toward the mountainside and farther from the ledge. Their snowshoes were awkward and in the way.

Faith gave him an impertinent look that was adorable and worrisome at the same time. He wouldn’t get away with something so easy as a slap to his cheek after kissing her a second time. She would demand answers to why they couldn’t be together. His gut hurt thinking about it. He didn’t turn to heaven, but he knew the Lord would be on his side this time. Protecting Faith from him was as important as protecting her from that cliff or the killer who’d attacked Arianna last night.

Levi sat up and helped her do the same, tugging her closer to the mountain. The large snowshoes extended out in front of them. Some pine trees jutted out above them on the sharp incline, providing a bit of shelter from the unpredictable wind currents and driving snow.

He pulled his phone out and pushed his hat up to hear better as he accepted the call from Lieutenant General Prescott.

“Captain!” Prescott greeted him. “Where are you?”

“I found Faith.”

“Oh, thank heaven above. Is she all right? Can you get her to a snowmobile?”

“She’s all right.”

Thank heaven above? He should. For the first time, heaven had come through for him. He didn’t want to think about that or Faith almost dying. Not right now.

Levi had taken off on snowshoes from the castle, but as snow started to fall, he lost Faith’s tracks or maybe they were Sergeant Bancock’s tracks, he knew he needed help.
